It is one of the defining parameters for any device as it gives a clear understanding of the actual performance. Power consumption efficiency of LED Grow lights is calculated by comparing their output with the output of equivalent traditional high-pressure sodium lights (HPS).

Plants require visible light spectrum (400 nm – 700 nm) for nourishment through the process of photosynthesis.

The process of photosynthesis cannot take place if the appropriate wavelengths of light are not available to the plants and without the process of photosynthesis, the plants cannot produce yield.

Different wavelengths of light are important during different stages of plant’s growth cycle i.e. vegetation process requires blue light wavelengths (430 – 460 nm) & the flowering process requires red light wavelengths (640 nm – 680 nm).

Grow lights have LEDs distributed in different colors in order to produce a perfect full light spectrum; however, not all grow lights are made equal. An analysis of the grow light spectrum gives a clear idea of its suitability and performance.

 

Cooling and Heat Sink Mechanism

When a grow light operates, it dissipates lots of heat, which if not properly managed can damage the panel or lower its efficiency.

It is, therefore, necessary for a grow light to have a cooling and heat sink mechanism that can remove the dissipated heat and keep the panel operating at a normal working temperature.

A standard cooling and heat dissipation system of an LED Grow light should at least contain a fan and heat sinks in order to remove the dissipated heat.

 

PPFD-Values

The density of the light available to the plants also plays an important role in the growth and development of a plant. 

It is expressed in terms of PPFD values, which can be calculated by placing a special sensor at any place in the growing area. 

The normal range of PPFD values, which are considered most suitable for plant growth, is 500 μmol/sec.m2 to 1000 μmol/sec.m2. Anything above and below the given range will either prove to be insufficient or damaging for the plants.

 

Coverage

It is another essential parameter for analyzing the performance and suitability of a grow light for any given requirement. The coverage area of the grow lights is defined in terms of core and maximum coverage area.

Light having a greater core and maximum coverage area for a particular power rating will be superior as compared to the one having the same power rating but less effective coverage area. 

The coverage area of a grow light is associated with the PPFD values of the grow light and both these factors are dependent on the height of the grow light from the surface.

Ygrow is a full light spectrum LED grow light used by indoor growers for the purpose of providing a sunlight look alike spectrum to the plants. One of the main specialty of the Ygrow grows light is that all its LED chips have a full light spectrum instead of the distribution of the LEDs into different colors. In this way, a more uniform spectrum of light is available to the plants during the cultivation process. The dimensions of the device are 12.8 x 7.4 x 1.9 inches while the weight of the grow light is 3.2 pounds.

It is made of a lightweight material having a well researched and compact design. The device has LEDs installed in the front portion of the panel, which is oriented at angles of 90 degrees and 120 degrees.

It is another popular LED grow light whose every LED chip produces a full light spectrum. The second-generation grow light series of Roleadro have high brand recognition around the world. The dimensions of the Roleadro 600W grow light are 14.6 x 11 x 2.4 inches while the weight of the device is 6.2 pounds.

It has a solid design and construction, which has been certified by authorities for safe operation. It also has a daisy chain mechanism, which enables the growers to connect the grow lights in series for greater area coverage.

MarsHydro is a well-known brand for manufacturing high-quality LED Grow lights since these grow lights can produce a good quality yield in a decent grow area. MasHydro 600W is also widely used around the world for the cultivation of cannabis. It has dimensions of 18 x 11 x 3 inches while the weight of the device is 11.4 pounds.

Conclusion

We have reviewed 12 600W LED Grow lights, and based on our review criteria defined in the introduction, we have come to the conclusion that Advanced Platinum Series P600 600W and Vivosun 600W are the two highest rated grow lights. 

Advanced Platinum series lights are expensive as compared to their competitors but their specifications and performance are far better in terms of their power consumption efficiency, light spectrum, coverage area, and light density. 

Similarly, the Vivosun 600W is much cheaper as compared to P600 but it also possesses superior features such as greater HPS replacement and coverage area for high-quality yield. The lifespan of these lights is also greater in the range of 100,000 operational hours making them suitable for long-term use.
